AbstractFor nny nation to achieve competitive advantage, technology is the masterkey. Various institutions which promote the development of the technology for a particular industry is tenned as technology infrastructure. This study assesses the strength of the technology infrastructure by examining each ofthe phases ofthe four basic technology component. (Technoware,Humanwaxe,Inforware,Orgaware) life chains. Two measures are considered in this study. Firstly, the continuity analysis to verify the existence of each phase in the life chain upto the minimum threshold (critical) level. Secondly, the strength analysis of individual phases in the life chain. The concept of capacity utilization of the exisUng infrastructure and the interaction between the different. components of the technology infrastructure is also introduced. Rubber indust1y in Malaysia and Leather industty in India are taken for the purpose of illustrating the concepts developed.
