AbstractEstimating benefits of watershed conservation projects requires the analysis of physical-resource and socio-economic data for the valuation of benefits and costs. A Geographic Information System (GIS ) is a potential decision support tool for this task . In order to estimate the economic benefits from soil and water conservation projects in small watersheds, a typical watershed was selected. A GIS was used to develop the necessary database for the study. Thematic maps for landcover, soils, and slope were digitized and overlaid to estimate potential erosion rates by using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). The generated erosion map of the area was used as the basis to identify priority subcatchments in the watershed, where soil and water conservation measures were proposed. Using the available information on costs and benefits, an economic analysis was conducted. Benefit-Cost (BC) estimate of the proposed conservation project revealed a favorable BC ratio of 2. 2: 1. The methodology of the study can be applied to agricultural watersheds both for planning and estimating the benefits of soil and water conservation projects.
