AbstractIn this study, particular emphasis has been focussed on the use of screw plate test in determining undrained and drained deformability, the de ve lopment of excess pore water pressure, and consolidation characteristics of the soft Bangkok clay at the two projects, namely: Second Stage Bangkok Expressway System )!roject ( Middle rang Road Toll Plaza ) and Thonburi-Paktho Highway project. A series of in- situ tests for each site were carried out including four screw plate tests, four pressuremeter tests, and two field vane tests as well as eight oedometor tests in the laboratory. The in- situ tests were performed at two levels, at depth of 3 m a nd 6 m for each site. The values of compressibility parameters obtained from screw plate tests wore compared with the results from other in- situ tests . Also the values of soil parameters obtained from the field tests were compared with the results from conventional laboratory one dimensional consolidation (oedometer) tests. The ultimate bearine; capacity of the soil from screw plate test was derived from the load- Jeformation relationship and computed using four methods, namely: Terzaghi 's method , double tangent method, hyperbolic method, and peak value method using the load- deformation curve . All the results were also relatively described. The values of the drained and undrained modulus of the soil from screw plate test were derived from loaJ- deformation and time- settlement curves and compared with the results from pressure meter tests. The values of undrained shear strength of the soil from the screw plate tests were also compared to the results from pressurometer and field vane t ests . ASAOKA 's graphical method was used to compute the coefficient of consolidation from the screw plate test ln the field and compared to corresponding values from the oedometer tests in the laboratory. The ratio of coefficient of consolidation from screw plate test against from oedometer test ranges from 5 to 47 with average value 15 in this s ·Ludy. It agrees well with the results of previous investigators . Based on the soil parameters obtained from screw plate test and the results of settlement prediction the e mba nkment of Second Stage Bangkok Expressway System project using the elastic method, have a good agreement with the measure d values.
