AbstractThis study examines bridge bidding as an example of reasoning in a multiple agent domain. An agent in a multi-agent reasoning dorĀµain must have capabilities to reason about beliefs and inference processes of other agents in the domain. Bridge is a game of imperfect information - a player has only partial information about the game position. Bridge players reason about bids made by other players in order to increase their knowledge of game position. This reasoning is facilitated by availability of information about how other players bid under different situations. A framework, deriving from amalgamated logic system, is proposed for representing a player's knowledge. Meta-logical and meta-reasoning capabilities of a player are formulated using a demo, a meta-level predicate, to represent provability at the object level. Within this framework, the ability of a player to form explanations for bids made by other players is shown. A method for deriving useful information in the form of confirmed partial explanation from multiple candidate explanations is formulated. Explanation tree is proposed as a structure to store the unconfirmed part of the explanations. The confirmed and unconfirmed parts of explanations are used together with the knowledge of bidding systems and conventions for arriving at a bid to make. An outline of a bridge bidding program together with a comprehensive example using these concepts is given.
