AbstractThis thesis presents the stress-strain behavior and strength characteristics of soft Bangkok clay in the normally and over consolidated state under isotropic pre-shear consolidation condition in extension unloading. The volumetric yielding of the clay below state boundary surface is studied by performing drained triaxial extension tests by keeping Mean Normal Stress as constant. Consolidation and swelling characteristics are studied under isotropic condition to check the critical state parameters. All the ranges from lightly over consolidated to heavily overconsolidated region within the State Boundary Surface is covered. Undrained extension unloading tests were performed. All the tests were strain controlled. Initial pre shear void ratio of all the samples were kept constant at 1.95 to follow the Hvorslev type of concept. The literature review consists of the behavior of the normally and over consolidated clays emphasizing on the critical state stress-strain themies both with associated and non associated flow rules. All the results are produced and discussed in the following chapter. Consolidation and swelling parameters A and K: values are found to be 0.50 and 0.10 respectively for the tested . soft clay under isotropic condition. From undrained tests, a unique State Boundary Smface, associated critical state line and Hvorslev failure envelope is obtained. These tests also confirms the existence of a set of constant q yield loci for undrained distortional strain on the wet side of critical and a radial fan of contours on the dry side of critical. Constant mean normal stress drained tests also confirms a unique State Boundary Smface, associated with the critical state line and the Hvorslev failure envelope. The tests also confirms the plastic behavior inside the State Boundary Surface and shows volumetric yielding in different degrees. Dilational behavior is observed in almost all areas within the SBS except a narrow zone near the conventional volumetric yield locus where compressive behavior is observed. In a zone close to the isotropic line the volumetric strain is found elastic. This elastic zone is nearer to isotropic line in HOC region and gradually extended from isotropic line in the LOC region
