Abstract | The data from t he second Stage Expressway System (SES) were used for this case study. The statistical and probabilistic methods were used in analyses and simulation of the soil data and design of embankment slope. A probabilisti c modeling of undra ined shear strength and s tandard penetrat ion test data was carried out by using Monte-Carlo simulation technique called Nearest-Neighbor Method. The Nearest-Neighbor Method was used to simulate the data on soil profiles (one-dimensional) and the data of soi l properti es (twodimensional) at location in between boreholes. Both three-dimens ional model, considering the end effect along the axis of embankment, and two-dimensional model of plane strain s lope stability analysis using Simplified Bishop method and variance reduction formulation were used in the probabilistic s lope stabil i ty analyses . Much faster results can be achieved by i ncorporating the use expert system capacities in defining the final result of consultation of factor of saf ety and probability of failure. Success in geotechnical engineering requires the collection of tremendous amount of data. On the other hand, only certain data are o f interest , and often meaningful results of the data acquisition must be preceecled by statist i cal analyses . These tasks i s can be accomplished quite efficiently and inexpensively with computers. Expert System by VP-Expert i s used in this study to aid in data access that have been s imulated from the Nearest-Neighbor Method and stored in a works heet file. A s imple knowledge base was created in consultation of des ign of embankment slope based on the Simplified Bishop s lope stability analys i s method in the form of external programs . The knowledge base a l so used the capac ity of graphic primitive in VP-Expert to store the mean so il properties (vane strength, SPT-N values, W, PL, LL, PI, t otal unit weight, and subsoil profile ) in the case study and s hgw the properties both in the form of graphics and tables . The graphic printout can be obtained easi l y by the user press ing the [Shift+Print Screen] button. Finally, the use of empirical autocorrelation function(ACF) seems to conf irm and explain better t-he- failure--r.w ne-s than utilizing- ideali zed theoreti cal ACF by reanalyses of t he previous work of PATRON(1989) in Bangpli road embankments. |
