AbstractFiltration behavior is investigated by conducting an extensive laborato1y testing program on widely and gap graded base soils using screen as filter media. The gradation of base soil is more impoitant for a successful formation of self-filtration layer through the filtration process. A boundaiy between stable and failme can be explained more precisely by incorporating three factors namely DB95/DB85 ratio, uniformity coefficient (CtJ and broadness coefficient (C8); their effects ai·e significant on the amount of base soil loss as weH as on filtration behavior. A gap ratio of 4 is investigated as the 11critical gap ratio 11 for gap graded base soil. The influence of coai·ser paiticles than the screen opening is important for the formation of self-filtration layer. A compai·ative study on the self-filtration process is pe1formed by varying the extmded layer thickness of the base soil and found almost similai· behavior. For simulating the losses and settlement of base soil, the predictfon formula ai·e proposed tlu·ough statistical analysis.
