AbstractNutrient sources and loading of Dianchi Lake have been studied based on available data. A VOLLENWEIDER chart and the OECD boundary value of classification of lakes have been applied to assess the eutrophic state of Dianchi Lake. As a consequence of the morphometric and loading conditions, the north part or the Internal Lake is hypertrophic, while the south part, the Outer Lake is eutrophic. An eutrophication model is set up to assess the eutrophication condition and evaluate restoration methods. Reduction of external nutrient input is not enough to alleviate the hypereutrophic state in the Internal Lake. In-lake control measures must be implemented in the Internal Lake. The most feasible in-lake control measure is harvesting of water hyacinths. Routine control measure must be undertaken to remove nutrients and toxic substances in the sediment.
