AbstractUsing two different types of vertical prefabricated band drain in an undisturbed soft Bangkok clay the horizontal coefficient of consolidation was determined and evaluated using Rowe cell in the laboratory. In addition, a new apparatus was designed and fabricated to determine their discharge capacity. It was found that the horizontal coefficients of consolidation using different drains have different magnitudes and is considered insignificant. The horizontal coefficient of consolidation decreased with the increase in vertical pressure which is more pronounced when the preconsolidation pressure was exceeded. The discharge capacity of the prefabricated drain was also determined and found that it decreased with the increase lateral pressure. Moreover, it also depend on the stiffness of the core, the tensile strength of the filter jacket and the cross- sectional area of the drain. The discharge capacity is greater for PD-B drain than PD-A drain because of the difference in cross- sectional area. PD-B has larger cross-sectional flow area with stronger filter jacket. Using the new apparatus, discharge capacity test recommends to have further study using different rubber membrane thickness and more types of drains should be tested.
