AbstractThe mechanical properties of rock mass of Lam Ta Khong Pumped Storaged Project in the research study were estimated by the application of rock mass classification schemes to provide the information for comparison to in-situ tests. The rock mass classification systems conducted for the research study of the project are the EPDC Classification, Geomechanics Classification, and Q-System. The comparison and correlation between the systems is carried out to study the relationship of classification systems for the project rock mass. The laboratory tests of intact rock core were performed to determine the mechanicals properties of rock material encountered around caverns location. The engineering geological mapping and observation of ground responses along the early rock of the exploratory tunnel and structural mapping of geological conditions on ground surface was made. An assessment, comparison, and correlation of geotechnical parameters and ground response involved is carried out. From the estimation of rock mass properties based on three system of rock mass classification, the estimated properties based on RMR and Q-system gave the greater value than EPDC (CRIEPI) classification. The predominant type of ground response in sheared siltstone at shallow depth near portal was loosening and some air slaking which caused the overbreak in the crown area. The overbreak was mostly caused by delay of support and leaving of unsupported excavation for a long distance behind the face.
