AbstractThe surface erosion process due to runoff was simulated in the laboratory using model tank and a rainfall simulator to produce the necessary artificial raindrops. The research concentrates on the erosion of cohesionless soils caused by rain. Three (3) types of cohesionless soil with different gradations were used, they are medium sand, fine sand and silty sand. The experimental variables include (1) the slope of the compacted soil (15° and 20°); (2) the duration of rain ranging from 10 to 20 minutes, and (3) the different soil types. Experimental findings include: splashed particles are generally finer than the eroded and original material; sizes of splashed particles are not a function of slope: increase in slope gradient will also increase the quantity of eroded material; materials retained on the surface are coarser than the original.
