Abstract | Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam has been founded on the floodplain of the Red River. It is underlain by thick Quaternary deposits. The young unconsolidated deposits serve at the same time as foundation~, construction materials, water bearing and waste receiving medium. As the geologic environment could be regarded as both resource and hazard, favorable and adverse conditions coexist in the area. Floods, land subsidence and earthquakes are geologic hazards that are highlighted in this study. For conservation and sustainable development of Hanoi proper land use planning represents an imperative that involves the integration of a series of factors. The present study will provides an example of how geology can be ยท integrated in the planning process with the aid of a new technology known as Geographic Information System (GIS). It also constitutes an incentive for new studies that would follow in the years to come in order to make the city a nice place to live. |
