Abstract | In order to improve public bus services, it is important to evaluate the performance of bus services in Jakarta. Deficiency of bus services and user characteristics are the most important indicators for evaluating the quality of performance of bus services. This study attempted to examine the existing bus operations and their services such as travel time and travel speed, delays, average headway, waiting time of passenger, dwell time, passenger boarding & alighting , and layover time. Beside, bus users characteristics were also investigated. In Jakarta there are four major types of buses currently being provided their services, but due to the limited budget and time only a single route was selected to represent each bus service namely Route No. 70, No. BT-01, No.10, and No.S-604 , represented the double decker, articulated , regular, and medium buses services, respectively. Bus -operation analyses showed that bus bunching phenomenon occurred for all bus services, which implied the irregularity in headways even at the bus stops and terminals. Lack of control and proper bus scheduling regarding bus hourly frequencies at all terminals caused uncertainty in passenger waiting time. It was also found that dwell time on weekdays were shorter than weekend for bus route No. 10 and S-604 at all periods. These are unusual trend. Meanwhile the 0 minute of layover time at terminals were found for all routes, meaning that no resting time for bus crews which will have impact to safety aspects due to fatigue and tired of bus crews. Bus users characteristics showed that all passengers of bus services were dominate by males. Majority of passengers have low income. Most of the Jakarta commuters did not complain about bus fare and waiting time. However they rated the bus services to be poor and fair. Almost all bus passengers agreed that the bus lane and restricted area significantly reduce the travel time and should be implemented on many other roads in Jakarta. |
