Abstract | Thailand is one of the rapid developing countries in Southeast Asia. The main development has been focused on industrialization. The rapid industrial development of Thailand is concentrated in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region (BMR), particularly in Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan, two of the provinces adjacent to Bangkok. As an immediate consequence of industrialization, urbanization occurred, which is unplanned and haphazard. Along with many other problems one of the most important problem is the housing of factory workers. Most of the workers in these factories are young and unmarried women . This study focuses on northern Corridor of Pathum Thani, a rapidly urbanizing and industrializing fringe area in the north of the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, specially the housing conditions and housing demand of the women workers. The study found that previously the factory owners used to build workers houses in the compound of the factory. The recently established factories are situated in the industrial estates where the land is expensive and housing is not allowed in the factory compound. In a situation like this some companies rent walk- up apartments constructed by National Housing Authority or private sector. Other companies who do not consider the housing as responsibility of the factory authority, provide buses which ply the highway between Bangkok, Pathum Thani and Ayutthaya. Workers who are not provided with housing often settle in private sector dormitories or in informal settlements, often resulting in inefficient land use. Analyzing the perceptions of the workers living in both types of housing, it has been found that there is a correlation between the choke of housing and socio-economic characteristics of the workers. The women workers from both type of housing are making tradeoff between their personal/family life and economic constraints. There is a wide scope of private rental housing in the study area. In conclusion of the study it has been recommended that Government should consider Pathum Thani province as an administratively urbanized area and provide public transport along this corridor. The feasible idea is that the Government should increase the accessibility to new areas of land in East-West direction of the northern corridor. The private sector should be encouraged to build low- cost rental housing in vicinity of the industries, by giving tax incentives. While designing these low- cost rental housing emphasis should be given to the need and socio-economic background of the migrant women workers. |
