AbstractThe study was performed on the Unong open pit mine of Semirara Coal Corporation to investigate the factors which control the stability of the pit slope. Investigation was concentrated on the south wall of the present pit. The investigation covers the study of previous researches made on the area, field and discontinuity mapping on the south wall; laboratory testings to determine shear parameters; and analysis of slope using stereonets and Simplified Bishop Method. Based from the laboratory results, the median compressive strength of the strata is 210 KPa, and is considered as very weak materials, typical of soils. Shear strength parameters derived from the tests are: for clay - cohesion of 43 - 76 KPa and friction angle of 16 ° - 18 ° ; and for sand - cohesion of 0 - 280 KPa and friction angle of 37 ° - 42°. These test results were then used to analyze the failure of southeast wall and stability of the south wall. Circular failure surface passing through the toe was assumed owing to the weak nature of the strata.
