AbstractSeveral failures occurred along the Mae-Wang Kiew-Lom irrigation canal banks. In order to investig·ate the slaking and swelling behavior of the soils in the region, undisturbed clayshale samples were collected from five test pits and tested to obtain their physical properties, swelling potential as well as t heir slaking char acteristics. A large number of swelling tests were carried out to determine the swelling strains, swelling· pressures and neutral pressures. The results of natural conventional swell-consolidation test give swelling· str ain of 3.5-7% at natural conditions and 12-18% in an air-dried conditions, and the corresponding· swelling pressures of the clayshale are 50-100 kPa and 170-500 kPa, respectively. Slaking intensity is larger in the crack zone for air-dried samples as compared with natural samples and when slaking develops in the crack zone, leading to increase in swelling potential of the clayshale. The combination of semi-arid climatic condition, fluctuation of water level in the canal and high content of montmorillonite develops condition favorable for the bank slope failures. The main cause leading to failure of the canal is the reduction in the strength of the soil due to the swelling and slaking of t he clayshale.
