AbstractEngineering geological maps of the Kukuan area of Central Taiwan were prepared from available geo l ogical investigation and laboratory test data . Three maps , including geomorphologic map , geologic map , geohydrolog i c map , landuse map were generated . Mountains, l andslide t errains, terraces , river valley , debris flow and talus are the landforms of t he study area. Rock units in the study area include Eocene-Oligocene quartzite, muddy sandstone and argillite , Quaternary terrace deposits, l and s l ide deposits, river alluvium and debris flows . Groundwater from spring has a good quality s uitable for drinking. Two hot springs are used for recreational purpose. Serious river bank erosion occurs during floods, due to heavy rainfall in the rainy or typhoon season . This area is in a l ow se i s mic risk zone. Leachate from one waste disposal site near the study a r ea may pollute t he river waters . Land use development i s proposed under the consideration of the geot echni cal hazard s of the area .
