AbstractLaboratory-s cale and pilot-scale study was conducted to evaluate the efficiencies of AGWSP (Attache d-growth waste stabilization ponds) in treating a phenolic wastewate r. Experimental results obtained i n the l aboratory-scale units r eveal ed that the AGWSP fed with influent phenol concentrations of 500-2000 mg/L had their SCOD and phenol r emoval e ffi c i encie s decreased wi th increas ing phenol concentration. At the influent phenol concentration of 500 mg/L, corresponding to the organic loading r a t e (OLR) of 180 kgCOD/(ha . d), the SCOD and phenol removal e ffi ciencies were 94. 2 and 99. 7%, respectively. At the influent phenol concentrations of 1000 , 1500 and 2000 mg/L (corresponding to OLR of 360 , 540 and 720 kgCOD/(ha . d)), the SCOD and phenol removal efficiencies were 50.8 and 50.5, 45.4 and 45.5, and 27.9 and 28 . 0%, respectively. The pilot-scal e AGWSP s hock-loaded with 500 mg/L of phenol could recover to i ts norma l pe r fo rmance in wit hin 13 days a fter the phenol dos age . The AGWSP uni ts we re observed to have excessive bi of ilm growth on the a ttac hed-growt h media after about 2 month of operation . The attac hedgr owth media s hould be c l eaned pe riodically to ensure maximum treatment efficiency of the AGWSP units .
