AbstractIn this study, a twelve-node thin-walled finite element based on assumed strain method is developed and its applicability to general thin-walled structures is discussed. Due to undistorted cross section assumption adopted in the present f01mulation, the additional stresses due to distortional deformation of cross section is ignored. In order to check the validity of this assumption in practice, a more rigorous analysis by shell element is conducted for verification. A parametric study is also conducted to evaluate the influence of additional longitudinal warping stresses due to torsional and distortional components of loading. Results reveal that these additional longitudinal stresses will not govern the design of straight thin-walled members but it may be significant in the curved ones.
