AbstractSeveral seismicity maps of Kunming, People's Republic of China were made based on past earthquake data and geological data. Seismic hazard zoning (peak ground acceleration, and peak particle velocity) of Kunming and adjacent area were made based on ESTEVA's attenuation relationship. The seismic risk analysis were done by using two methods. The risk analysis shows that Kunming area is located in a relatively active area. The mean shear- wave velocity map of soils in Kunming was made. The soils of Kunming were divided into four types. Most of the city area are located on moderately soft soils. The liquefaction susceptibility map of Kunming was made based on the general geological data. The city area was divided into three hazard zones. The estimates of economic loss and loss of lives and injuries were done. The results of total economic loss (including building damage loss and residents' property loss) under the intensity 7 and 8 earthquake are about 1,195 million Chinese Yuan and 2,586 million Chinese Yuan respectively. The estimated number of people injured and dead in Kunming city under the intensity 7 and 8 earthquake are about 4862 and 30175. The damage study of several hospitals and universities was also attempted in this research. The results show that the building damage loss and casualities under the intensity 7 earthquake is low, but under the intensity 8 earthquake it is very high.
