Abstract | A finite element analysis of skew plates is carried out with respect to a skew coordinate system and pseudo displacement components. Two four-node finite elements are developed based on classical theory of thin plates and Mindlin' s plate theory. The thick plate element which employs bilinear shape functions is improved to give acceptable results in thin plate regime, by incorporating a selective integration scheme. Both elements are tested for their accuracy and convergence with available results. The plate element based on classical plate theory is modified to accommodate the macroelement analysis of skew waffle slabs. An option is given to select either a four-node, eight-node or twelve-node macroelement, depending on the accuracy requirement of the user. The proposed macroelement is tested for its efficiency, versatility and convergence for some of the practical problems, and results compared with available and conventional methods. It was found that the proposed macroelement is remarkably efficient in terms of computer time and storage while giving sufficient accuracy for most of the practical applications. Also the proposed macroelement is equally accurate in analyzing rectangular plates with or without stiffeners. |
