AbstractCityward migration of rural people facing zero probability of absorption in the urban-modern (U-M) sector is prevalent in most of the Third World countries. This study attempts to explain such movement of people who do not have the necessary human capital, like education and trainings, for U-M sector employment. In general, it delves on the determinants, mechanism, and socio-economic consequences of rural-urban migration. Respondents from 3 urban barangays in Cebu City were randomly selected for this purpose. Findings show that migrants eyeing on urban informal sector (UIS) jobs are rationally motivated with the desire to improve their economic and/or social status. Thus, apparently, migration is socio-economic propelled. The movement took place under the auspices of chain migration --- assistance was offered by those who have moved ahead; in turn, the new migrants assisted incoming migrants. Further migration is induced through contacts established between the migrants and their rural place of origin. Findings in this study are used as empirical bases in formulating a UIS specific migration decision model. It hopes to provide a complementary explanation on the movement of people that is not given prominence by Todaro's model.
