Abstract | From the engineering point of view, the Dan Hoai irrigation system is representative for the Red river delta irrigation projects, which have been operating for 30 or more years now and are showing lots of disadvantages. This study is an application of a method of investigation, analysis and design for improvement of such the systems. Field measurements were carried out in this study concerning the pumping station and the main canal during the land preparation for the spring rice 1993. Routine records on the performance of the pumps and the water stage in the main canal were collected. The original design of the headwork structure and the pumping station were reevaluated. The irrigation requirements were also calculated. Computations show that the main intake is instable during the high water season if either it is operating or it is with no water downstream. The risk is not only the safety of the structure itself but also the survival of the crops which may be forced to stand the water shortage for 33 days. However, the protecting measure is rather simple and effective. Replacement of the pumps will help save 3.67 million kWh while guaranteeing water supply for 9200 ha rather than 7120 ha. Lining of the main canal may reduce the water loss from 15 million down to 0.7 million cubic meters a year. The offtake structures along the main canal tend to release as much as 193 % of their designed discharge and are suggested to be relocated. To strengthen the cross-section of the transition canal is expensive but essential to prevent sliding and to reduce the sediment deposition from 63.1 % down to 34.5%. Many other supporting devices are also recommended. The capital investment is over 18 billion VND (1.8 million USD), but with the internal rate of return of 17%, the project is all together economically benefiting. |
