AbstractMonthly streamflows play a very important role in water resources projects, yet they are not always readily available at the sites. The present study considered the estimation of the monthly flows, particularly at stations with limited data or at ungauged stations in the Red River Basin, North Vietnam. For this purpose, four popular models, namely the Tank Model, the Regression Model, the Regional Monthly Rainfall-Runoff Model and the R-Index Model were used. Several modifications were made to the models to suit the existing conditions in this region. An intercomparison on the relative merit of the models was carried out and the use of regionalized model parameters in monthly streamflow estimation was also considered. Results of the calibration and verification stages were analyzed per model. All the three models, Tank, Regression and RMRR, could provide very good results for most of the stations in the Red-River-Basin, North Vietnam. The Tank Model required a lot of effort before a suitable model parameters can be obtained. Therefore, the remaining two models, Regression and RMRR are used for most cases in the later part. In view of the good result produced, the time required as well as the simplicity, the Regression model was finally recommended.
