AbstractDuring the past two decades, the composition, characteristics and labour absorptive capacity of the jnformal sector have been explored thoroughly in many of the developi.ng countries. Presently the research orients to place the informal sector more on the general. context of urban economics and urban management. However, the significance of informal sector enterprises as a vehicle for economic development is not being explored to that extent, particularly under the current global concern o n sustainable development. The problem of reconciling the growth of informal economic activities on t he one hand and modernizjng without unpolluting the urban eco-system on the other is one of the major development issues that the cities of the developing world face today. This study orients to identify the role informal sector can play in achieving sustainability and which sub-sectors of it possess growth potential for sustainable development. The analysis finds, the use of renewable energy as its major potential and recycling of wastes as its ma j or contribution towards sustainable development. Finally the study outlines some policy implications based on these findings.
