Abstract | The main objectives are to examine the sustainable development approach for coastal resources management , primarily mangrove forests; to determine the optimum alternatives for sustainable use of coastal natural resources; and to suggest policy initiatives and strategies for planning a nd management of natural resources in coastal areas. Sustainable development is based on an interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral approach. It is characterized as multi-dimensional process, action oriented, people-centered oriented, a nd future oriented. Planning and implenting strategies are investigated: integrated multi-sectoral management approach; decentralized system of plan making, implement at ion , and evaluation ; redistribution with growth; local institutional strengthening; a nd people's participation. Promoting interagency collaboration, increasing public aware ness toward coastal resources conservation, and encouraging cooper at ion among local authorities, non - governmental organizations a nd lo ca l people's organizations are essential for coastal area development through integrated coastal resources management . Mangrove management plans should be set up through a decentralized process at provincial and district levels, supported by a data base and information system for participatory management of coastal resources. |
