AbstractThe destruct ions caused by earthquakes can be reduced through seismic hazard prediction which deals with estimating the like lihood of earthquake to occur and damage in a given area. This study is concerned with the method developed from integrated application of remote sensing and GIS techniques for earthquake hazard assessment. The methodology followed in the present study involved the search for linear features (lineaments ) which may be related to tectonic activities, and their interpretation. This process consists of three main parts. The first parts involved digital image processing of the MSS data and lineament interpretation using Earth Resource Digital Analysis System (ERDAS). The second part included integration of remote sensing and GIS for lineament analys is and 1ineament frequency-distribution mapping. In the third part incorporation of GIS was carried out to develop earthquake hazard maps and to make a guide line for development planning in an intensive seismic area. The effort was made to identify and analyze t he relationship between 1ineaments and seismicity which is significant in seismic zoning . The results are seismogenic and earthquake-vulnerability zoning maps. The methodology developed in this study is also found to be a useful tool for assessing the impact of hazard on the rea l 1ife. Finally, this thesis provides some guide lines for development planning in an hazard- vulnerable area.
