AbstractThe present study deals with the us e of NOAA/AVHRR data for applications to mapping vegetation in Myanmar. AVHRR data of 2 dates, 17 February a nd 21 April 1994 for day passes representing dry winter conditions and , dry hot season conditions. AVHRR of 28 November 1990 was also applied with 6oarse resolution elevation data ETOP05 for the detection of vegetation types with elevation differences. The techniques of digital image processing of the level 1 b format AVHRR data for Image unpacking and format conversion, First georeferencing, Noise removal, Filling the holes , Second georeferencing, Cloud masking, Image cutting, Unsupervised classification, Supervised Classification and GIS overlaying are discussed. Combination of band 4, 2 and 1 shows the best result for supervised multispectral classification in forest cover mapping. AVHRR of 17 February 1991, date was found to be the reasonably cloud free image and was applied f or detail classifications and 21 April 1991 date was found to be the most suitable scene for Forest and Non-Forest discrimination. The thermal band shows the surface/vegetation canopy temperature features . Forest types having temperature differences due to the crown closure differences, elevation differences, moisture content differences, stand s height differences were effectively detected by the use of thermal band.
