AbstractIntelligent Network (IN) is a telecommunication architecture which enhances the management of service logic and related service data. It uses centralized database and control for the efficient performance of the network as well as introduction of more enhanced and sophisticated services. The increased architectural complexity of the IN places a heavy demand on the resource elements. The Service Control Point (SCP) is the element of the IN where the centralized service logic and related data resides. The allowed SCP delay limit is expressed as a maximum .average delay and the maximum delay experienced by 95% of the calls (commonly known as the 95th percentile delay). This thesis modeled the SCP based on Bellcore's Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) Release 1 SCP architecture and investigated the effects of different parameters on the SCP delay characteristics. The effects were quantified and delay values were tabulated for different hardware configurations. The factors influencing the delay probability density function (pdf) were determined. Equations establishing the relationships between the SCP delay and the SCP hardware/software configurations were derived, to help in network planning. The ratio of 95th percentile delay to mean delay and the slope of the SCP delay pdf at the 95th percentile delay were determined as parameters that can be used to describe the SCP performance .
