AbstractAn analytical model of liquid sloshing in the annular tank was formulated in particular based on the potential flow theory and concept of generalized coordinates in accompanying with Lagrange equation In this study. Experimental verification of the analytical model was performed by the shaking table test while the tests on the effect of the additional damping device, i.e., 4 wire-mesh screens, inserted into the annular tank model for increasing its damping ratio was conducted. Considering the practical application of the annular TLD to the TV tower model, the study was focused on the first sloshing mode. It was found that analytical results agree well with the experimental one. Shaking table experiment for investigating the effectiveness of annular TLD in suppressing the dynamic response of the TV tower model was carried out using both harmonic and earthquake excitations. Dynamic properties of the TV tower model, such as the natural frequency, mode shape and damping ratio were acquired. Dynamic response of the TV tower model without annular TLD and with TLD were compared. The experimental results showed that the annular TLD, whose 1st mode sloshing frequency was tuned to that of the TV tower model, was very efficient in reducing the resonance responses and effective to suppress the structural responses induced by the earthquake excitations.
