AbstractSetbacks are common geometric irregularities in buildings. A setback presents a large and abrupt change in the stiffness of lateral load resisting system. This change in rigidity may lead to a complex load redistribution. This study deals with the distribution of lateral seismic force along the height of setback frame buildings, 32 setback frames with different mass and stiffness distributions were selected for numerical calculation. Response spectrum method, equivalent lateral force procedure specified in Uniform Building Code (UBC 1991) and National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP 1988) were used to gain dynamic and static lateral force distribution along the height of each of 32 setback frames. A comparison of the results obtained by equivalent lateral force procedure and response spectrum method was made. A method for calculating lateral force distribution along the height of setback frame buildings was proposed. The results obtained by the proposed method and response spectrum method were compared with. The proposed lateral force distribution can be used in the preliminary design of setback frame buildings.
