Abstract | This research study is directed towards the new products of development in China Steel Corporation (CSC), the only integrated steel manufacturer and state-owned enterprise in Taiwan, Republic of China, which was founded in November, 1971 with an ultimate goal of producing 8 million metric tons of crude steel per year. The objective of this research is to analyze decision procedures for new product development at CSC, to identify the strategies for New Product Development {NPD) in CSC and to understand that factors responsible for success/failure of New Product Development at CSC. In this research, six stage normative model is presented as framework for NPD process based on relevant literature, namely 1) idea generation, 2) screening, 3) business analysis, 4) product design, 5) market testing, and 6) full scale on sale. In addition, a set of success and failure factors for NPD identified by integrating several research findings. Based on the framework, in-depth case study on NPD in CSC was conducted through interview with senior managers and several project leaders. The data on overall practice on NPD and detailed information on 7 successful NPD projects were collected. Through the descriptive analysis, overall NPD process was identified and analyzed. Also some success factors on NPD were identified, such as 1) relative advantage in product quality , 2) technical complexity and magnitude, 3) coordination of R&D, marketing, production, 4) top management support, 5) market need , growth, and size, 6) relative advantage in product price, 7) proficiency of understanding user needs, 8) proficiency of development process. In addition, some problems in CSC were analyzed, such as too detailed division of work and lack of communication among related departments. |
