AbstractChinese government decided to open its economy to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 1979. For a country who had been isolated from outside world for 30 years, this bold decision implies great challenge to the Chinese policy-makers who are ambitious to accomplish their goals but have little experiences in dealing with FDI. It is useful to study other neighbor countries' experiences in formulating FD! policy and make its policy more effective to serve China's development demands. In this research study, three Asian countries, India, Thailand and Republic of Korea, are selected to compare with China. Their FDI ·policies are presented in areas of policy objectives and policy measures, and compared in terms of consistency of means and ends, limitations on FDI, guarantees to FDI, bureaucratic efficiencies, supportive facilities and investment incentives. The result of the comparison reveals some policy deficiencies of China. Based on an analytical framework, a number of recommendations are made in the light of the findings.
