AbstractThe exploration activities since the beginning of this century marked the commencement of Natural Gas Industry of Bangladesh. However natural gas was discovered first in 1955 and its commercial use began in 1960 with the commissioning of Chhatak Cement Factory. All subsequent major developments took place during the post liberation period (1972). With the passage of time 16 more gas fields were discovered, gas reserve kept on increasing (23. 78 tcf) and the rate of consumption greatly increased (435 MMCFD) with diversification in consumption pattern. The Natural Gas Industry involves exploration, production, distribution and utilization of gas. Each of these involve application of technology and capital investment, human resource development, appropriate policy direction at national level and above all an effective management. This research study focuses on the utilization pattern of natural gas in Bangladesh. The aim of the research study is to identify sectors for increased utilization of natural gas resources of Bangladesh. Logically this necessitates identification of problems, issues facing the industry and the characteristics of the industry. Impact of trends of natural gas use worldwide and the role of governments in the promotion and encouragement of the industry's growth has been given due consideration. Although the approach adopted in this study is primarily qualitative in nature it has been substantiated whereever possible, with quantitative statistical data available from secondary sources and with interviews made with selected parties involved in the natural gas industry in Bangladesh, Europe and Thailand. It is hopped that findings and conclusions made in the research study would be useful to the parties engaged in the development of the natural gas industry of Bangladesh. Specially it will be useful to the Government of Bangladesh as a guideline in formulating future policies aimed at achieving increased utilization of natural gas.
