Abstract | This research study deals with the design and development process of One-Ton-Truck. The basis of the product design technology is considered as the MF-240 Tractor which the company has. been manufacturing since 1972. The transformation of Tractor design technologies into the designing of Truck includes the following steps covering the mechanism. 1) A complete breakdown structure of the two products i.e. Tractor and Truck from main components and systems to subassemblies is made. Then a technological relevance considering the design aspects and activities involved between the subassemblies of Tractor and Truck is determined and subassemblies of Truck are sorted out into three groups, i.e. identical, adaptation requiring and completely new, each category of group is dealt separately for design capabilities development and acquisition. 2) Design capabilities assessment of the design function of company to carry out the design work is done by examining the involvement of four components of design technology involving physical facilities, human abilities, design information and the design organisation practice required in the design process of the product. Design technology gap is then calculated for each sub-assembly in the adaptation requiring and completely new groups by finding the difference between the existing design capabilities in the company and desired level required for all the sub-assemblies chosen. 3) The last area will serve to fill up the design capability gap considering each group of sub-assemblies by devising indigenous technology development and acquisition mechanisms with a strategic consideration. |
