| Abstract | Technology has been recognized as an important strategic variable that confers, on those who
possess it, a distinct competitive advantage. This has given the scope for an intonational market for
technology, with those who possess it, willing to sell and those who require it, willing to buy. A
survey of literature on the process of technology transfer has revealed that many problems are faced
by the transferors and transferees of technology which results in the unsuccessful transfer of
technology.
This report starts out with a literature review on technology and the issues involved in technology
transfer. Subsequently, an "Appropriate Technology Perspective" of viewing the process of
technology transfer by transferees and a "Strategic Perspective" of viewing the process of technology
transfer by transferors is developed. Finally, the need for developing proper procedures, from a
management of technology perspective, for the selection of partners for technology transfer is
established. The two procedures are then introduces and described - one for transferees of
technology and the other for transferors of technology.
Three cases in India for transferees and three cases in Europe for MNCs were studied to obtain
inputs to the development of the procedures, at various stages, and to give the study a practical
touch.
The paper concludes by highlighting the importance of looking at the process of transfer of
technology from a Management of Technology perspective and some major implications for
managerial action. |
