Abstract | In large irrigation systems, water is distributed over a wide area with varying climatic, soils and crop conditions. In such systems, information on crops, soils and climatic parameters of the entire command area is required for proper water distribution. Geographic information systems are useful decision-support tools for irrigation water management. In this study, an interactive menu program called Computer Aided Mapping System was developed for the purpose of studying the command area of a large irrigation system. The program uses available software like AutoCAD , dBASE III Plus and Lotus 123. Its application was demonstrated to a canal command area of the Tha Maka Subproject, Mae Klong Irrigation Project in Thailand. Maps of field boundaries, irrigation and drainage systems layout, land cover, soil and topography were digitized into several layers using the drawing package. Spatial attributes such as crop-area distribution, soil characteristics and rotation block assignment were stored and manipulated using the database manager. Climatological and discharge data were entered and analyzed in the spreadsheet program. Soil characteristics were then analyzed for determining the suitability of the area to paddy and for identifying areas suitable for upland crops. The water demands at the tertiary level and t h e tertiary unit efficiency were also evaluated. The results can be readily used by irrigation managers for planning and operation of a given system. |
