AbstractThis study is concerned with possible modification of the PCC shop layout of M/S Seagate Technology - Teparuk. This shop produces more than 20 varieties of PCCs requiring different processing sequence making the material flow extremely complex. Due .the poor layout of the shop, the present material flow within different departments causes congestion in shop. There is only manual material handling in shop and skilled operators/material handlers are involved in materfal handling activities which results in loss of their productive time and increase in material handlin~ cost. The existing layout, when evaluated as per desired relationship chart, was found inefficient so in the study, problem is considered as a shop layout problem. The Computerized Relative Allocation of Facilities Technique ( CRAFT ) is used to develop the alternate layouts. This software requires following inputs: (i) From-To chart (ii) Move cost (iii) Initial layout. The From-to chart is prepared based on the information regarding variety of products, Product demand, operation sequence and batch size. The move cost is estimated from the manpower employed for material handling activities. Different layouts are generated by changing departmental area, introducing walkways among different departments, and by fixing some departments at their existing location. The effect of these changes is analyzed in terms of layout feasibility, material handling cost, department relocation cost and payback period. The alternative layouts save 27.72 % to 39.11 % M H cost, reduce production time, increase manpower and equipment utilization by t he reduction in distance travelled.
