AbstractExperiments were conducted to study the effect of enamel coating on streamlined boat hull with an effort to reduce the energy requirement of boats in agricultural operations. A study was carried out on enamel coated and varnished rice barge and fishing boat models to compare the drag force required within a speed range of 0.6 to 1.5 m/s at different loads varying from 6 to 9 Kg and 4.6 to 6.4 Kg respectively. The total weight of the coated and uncoated were kept same in the above tests. It was observed that the drag force required by the coated boats was less than the uncoated ones at all the speeds and loads. The maximum reduction in drag was 25.6% in rice barge and 27.7% in fishing boat model. The performance of boats were analyzed by adding equal weights to both coated and uncoated boats, to analyze the negative effect of extra weight contributed by the enamel coated plates against the benefits of enamel coating. Drag force for enamel coated boats was found to be higher than the other, in all of the operating conditions. Drag forces were also analytically determined if the enamel coated steel plates were replaced with aluminum thus reducing the plate to boat weight ratio by 67%. The coated rice barge model promised a drag reduction of 13% while the fishing boat showed 14%. It was found that the drag reduction depended strongly on the plates to boat weight ratio. It was estimated that if enamel coating is provided to full scale boats then the plates to boat weight ratio would be 89% and 87% lesser than that of the rice barge and fishing boat model thus promising a large saving in the energy consumption.
