AbstractThe research outlined in this thesis focuses on soil compaction modeling by applying the Dimensional Analysis Technique. A compaction model was developed to predict soil packing state under agricultural tire wheels relevant to various soil conditions, tire sizes, inflation pressure of the tire, axle load and number of the tire wheel passes by measuring the dry bulk density of clay soil used in the testing. Experiments were conducted to study the effects of various wheel and soil parameters on soil compaction. Axle load and number of tire passes proved to be the most significant parameters affecting the soil compaction. The soil compaction was increased with an increase in the axle load. Maximum soil compaction occurred immediately after the first pass of the tire wheel and during later passes, a very low compaction was noticed. Though soil compaction decreased with reduction in the tire inflation pressure to an acceptable level, its effect was not considerable in small range of variation. Equations to predict soil compaction for different soil and machine conditions were developed. These equation s can be used to predict soil compaction caused by agricultural vehicle traffic. From the results obtained from this study, it was possible to make useful suggestions and recommendations for better soil management practices in order to reduce damaging effects of soil compaction on crop production.
