AbstractIn a flexible manufacturing system, a cell controller must be able to identify and evaluate a number of alternative decisions to fulfill the objectives (such as minimum makes span, due dates, etc.) set by the factory level controller. In this study, a Petri net-based cell controller is presented for this task. In this approach, a static model is first developed by using the Integrated Computer Aided Definition (IDEFo) method to represent clear functional relationships of the objects (data, materials, machines, programs, etc.) of the system. Based on the static model, two Petri net models are developed for physical part flow and information flow, respectively. From the physical part flow model possible decision alternatives are generated and then synchronized with the information flow model for execution of the selected alternative.
