AbstractA step-wise development of a post-processor for a 5-axis CNC milling machine is presented. Two issues related to post-processor development namely: 1) part coordinate to machine coordinate transformation and 2) non-linearity in 5-axis machining were solved. The post-processor was implemented for the MAHO 600E machine using Microsoft Fortran V4.0. The functionality was developed based on the algorithms formulated for the solution of the issues presented. During the development, a pre-processor, to convert the cutter location tlata file, was required and developed using the VS Fortran on the IBM 3083 mainframe computer. There were three tests made on the post-processor. The first test involved comparing the APT post-processor output and the K.U. of Leuven post-processor output for the same cutter location data file input. A second test made use of a graphic simulator package concurrently being developed. The third test was on the MAHO 600E machine. The NC program output of the AIT post-processor was used to produce a part on the MAHO 600E machine.
