AbstractThe scheduling system developed in this study is to be used for the short term planning and control of a flowshop environment at the operational level. At this level, scheduling has to come as close to real-time as possible, and therefore the system has to be capable of generating . a schedule in a short time frame, at the same time capable of handling the dynamic nature that characterize the shop floor environment. Because of the time constraint and the unpredictability of the shop floor, traditional techniques such as branch and bound, dynamic programming, etc., are inappropriate. The approach taken in this scheduling system is to combine the use of heuristic rules with a mechanism that allows the human scheduler to influence the final schedule by interacting with the computer through a graphics interface during the scheduling process, while incorporating insights into scheduling gained from a study of just-in-time, optimized production technology and manufacturing resources planning (MRPII) approaches to production management.
