AbstractThis study primarily deals with determination of the optimal plant size of storage hydropower projects by considering each of the alternative feasible plant sizes of the projects as candidate plants in the electricity generation expansion planning model. The problem of generation expansion planning was formulated as a mixed integer programming. Results of the study confirm that the traditional approach of predetermining the size of storage hydro projects purely from feasibility studies does not always ensure the selection of optimal plant capacity if the objective of the utility is to minimize the total cost of the generation system expansion.
