Abstract | This study is an effort of developing a prototype expert system by integrating AI techniques with mathematical techniques for the problem areas of maintenance work at the Siam Gypsum Industry. Expert system for maintenance management named EXPERT-MM supports three main functions: maintenance policy suggestion, diagnosis, and maintenance scheduling. Maintenance policy deals with the type of preventive maintenance. Three preventive maintenance policies are introduced in this system. For each component or equipment, it analyses historical failure data and recommends an appropriate policy with an optimal preventive maintenance intervals based on failure rate and judgement of experts. The rotary screw type air compressor is selected for diagnosis. The diagnosis model is developed based on rule-based system with backward chaining mechanism. The knowledge acquisition processes have been made and are organized using the decision tree diagram architecture. The total 154 rules of diagnosis and 54 rules of maintenance model selection are transferred to different shallow (heuristics) knowledge base. This system is developed on dBASE-III Plus, TURBO PASCAL and rule-based expert system shell-EXSYS which supports backward chaining architecture. They are interfaced and integrated to a single system as a whole and can be implemented on IBM PC or compatible. The development of this system is discussed in details both designing and implementing the system. This prototype system is ready for the implementation at the Siam Gypsum Industry selected for the case study. |
