AbstractTraditional batch manufacturing always has inherent limitations. It can never cater efficiently and effectively to the needs of ever changing market where product variety and volume is neither high nor low. Flexible manufacturing systems offer the much needed flexibility in production. For this and many other reasons many manufacturing organizations are S'!Vitching over to flexible manufacturing type of production. Selection of machine tools is one of the first design problems which is complex and semi-structured. This study proposes an architecture for designing an intelligent decision support system that is intended to aid in making selection among alternative machines along multiple dimensions. A prototype decision support system for a fixed domain is developed to select a CNC turning center that is required to process a family of round parts. It assumes that justification and feasibility stages of flexible manufacturing system are over, and takes care of user's values and needs, involves heuristic knowledge from experts and uses the Analytical Hierarchy Process to find the most satisficing machine in the light of many objective as well as subjective attributes.
