AbstractThe basic equations for wave and current interactions of Shen (1991) and Hedges (1985) are reviewed. It was found through comparison of experiment and analytical solutions that the equilibrium range may not be applied on the interaction of waves and weak currents. Weak currents will mean currents that are not capable to produce wave breaking. However, for stronger currents, the equilibrium range constraint was found very necessary in the prediction of spectra in the region of saturation. An analytical expression for the estimation of the equilibrium range constant is presented and verified by the least squares method used by Hedges et al (1985). It was found that the result of the derived analytical expression for the equilibrium range constant, A• was acceptable. The critical depth for the horizontal water particle velocity is investigated. At this depth, the upper layer is considered to be amplified in the case of waves propagating on an adversed current. For the case of waves propagating with a following current, the layer below the critical depth Zc is the one being amplified extending up to the significant depth Zar- The amplification of the velocity will mean an amplification of the velocity spectra as well. An analytical expression for the critical depth is derived and verified by the experimental result .
