AbstractThis study presents a theoretical approach to predict the wave set- up in a river mouth . Firstly , ocean elevation in front of Nanakita river mouth was determined from measured water level elevation at river mouth b y Bernoulli 's equation. Difference of ocean elevation and Sendai Port water level, located 2 km north from Nanakita river mouth, provid0s The measured set-up height at river mouth . The existing wave set-up theory was extended for river mouth by considering the effect of current . The resulting equation was solved numerically from deepwater towards t he river mouth in collaboration with Godu ' s irregular wave breaking mod e l . The set- up computed at river mouth are then compared with t he measured set- up . The comparison shows t hat present approach yields predicted se t -up heigl1t at river mouth whicl1 are in fair agreement with measured values. On the other hand, the set- up computed by Goda ' s mod e l without considering the effect of current were overestimated.
