AbstractThe wave characteristics at the Erawan platform in the Gulf of Thailand are computed analyzing the recorded wind and wave data for two years in 1985 and 1987. The wave height and period are hindcasted using both Pierson-Moskowitz Spectrum method and Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSW AP) method. The appropriate wind duration which is an important parameter in both theories is studied for various approaches, i.e moving average and fixed duration. It is found that 24 hours period is suitable duration for wave height and period computation. The root mean square error of the wave height show reasonable good agreement with measured values while wave period show underestimate with 1.10 to 1.77 time in 1985 and 1987 respectively. The monthly and 10-day maximum values of the wave characteristics and their average were also computed. The maximum values of the significant wave heights can be used for any engineering design work and warning of the sea state without any adjustment. However, an average adjustment factor of 1.10 should be used for the monthly and 10-day maximum values of the hindcasted significant wave period at Erawan platform. The wind fields at Satun, Rayong and Sattahip stations are analyzed. It is found that the wind at Satun station is stronger than those at the other two stations. The wind at Sattahip station are found very low compared to those at Satun and Rayong stations. The directions of the recorded wind at Satun are found more deviate from the north while Rayong and Sattahip stations recorded the same wind directions. The wind at Rayong station can be used for wave hindcasting at Map Ta Phut Port applying a reduction factor of 0.50. The hindcasted wave period has to increase by a factor of 2.25. The wind at an onshore station can not be used for wave hindcasting at an offshore stations. Similarly, the wind recorded at an offshore station can not be applied for wave hindcasting at a near-shore station.
