Abstract | The effects of urbanization and environment on vegetable farm in this study is highlighted on the economical changes and environmental degradation views. The study was conducted in one village in Pathum Thani province, Thailand. The measurement of the economic and hi story performance of the village were described and analysed. The cost and return of vegetable was quantified. The effects of urbanization on vegetable cultivation in terms of land price increase, labour scarcity, capital, marketing and water pollution were investigated. The adverse effects of pesticide use which are insect resistance and health hazard were analysed. Finally, the cost of health hazard was estimated. The study indicated that land price increase effects are the reduction of rice planting area, change in pattern of cultivation and change in vegetable kinds. Low growth of rental rate was explained. The effects of labour scarcity are the changes in labour source and employment contract. Capital effects the increase of production cost while market became better access and enhanced the direct sell of the farmers. Water pollution effects on vegetable cultivation were not obvious and there was no effect to vegetable cultivation. Insect resistance existed with the increase of dosage and change in kind of insecticide. The health hazard cost due to pesticide use was very low compared the farm profit. These changes in pesticide use were not concluded that they caused the increase of farmers' hazard. |
